I wanted to share with you these 10 Fun Facts About “BOLT” that I think you will enjoy. This movie has become one of my all time favorite Disney movies. I love the story, the characters, the animation and the celebrities who voiced the characters. It’s just over all a fantastic movie.

10 FUN FACTS ABOUT “BOLT”

1. Mittens, the street-wise alley cat, was originally called Mr. Mittens, because her owners never took the time to figure out if she was a boy or a girl.

2. The creative journey began with the desire to evoke the painterly style of classic Disney Animated Features and American painters such as Edward

3. Hopper, George Bellows and other Ashcan School Artists from the early 20th century.

4. To get a feel for the locations where Bolt and his entourage would be traveling, art director Paul Felix, director of lighting and look Adolph Lusinsky and others packed it up and hit the road. Exploring such locations as New York, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.

5. Rhino, the hamster, was originally supposed to be a rat. During the initial story retreat to develop the idea for the film, Rhino was morphed into a hamster riding inside a plastic ball.

6. The design for the main character Bolt was loosely inspired by the American White Shepherd.

7. It takes 4-5 months to get one shot all the way through production – from layout to animation to lighting (a shot averages 4 seconds in length on “Bolt”).

8. There are a total of 28 sequences in the film comprised of 131,738 frames and 1,239 shots. 110 terabytes of data are active at any second in the production.

9. Throughout production, each member of the crew working on “Bolt” would pin pictures of their pet in the “Production Pets Gallery.”

10. The production actually has a pet hamster named Doink! who has become a beloved crew member and is observed as reference for the animators.

If you purchased the “BOLT” combo pack on March 22nd, then most likely you have had the chance to watch “Super Rhino”. The standard BOLT DVD also goes on sale today, March 24th.

I thought the short was done really well and it was so funny! If you have seen it, I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

In celebration of the standard DVD release today, I’ll have a few posts highlighting some of the characters. You can already see an interview with Penny and Bolt, as well as Miley Cyrus talking about the movie.

Later, we’ll hear from the pigeons, Mittens and 10 fun facts about BOLT. Right now, it’s Super Rhino’s turn! See below for an interview with Rhino, clips from the movies, as well as some stills from the Disney short “Super Rhino”. As always, Rhino is keeping it real.

Hi Rhino! What are you up to?

Nothing much. Just rolling around.

Are you a hamster?

Excuse me? Of course I’m a hamster! Except I’m not just any hamster. I’m one-sixteenth wolf with a little wolverine in there, too. I’m not to be messed with!

We’ve heard you’re a big fan of television?

Television? What’s that? Wait a minute… Are you talking about the magic box that people stare at? It’s got moving pictures on it – and Bolt’s pictures are the best. I love the magic box. It’s fully awesome!

Are you a fan of Bolt, too?

Of course I am! Bolt the super dog is the most awesome thing in my life. He can outrun speeding missiles and he can burn through solid metal with his heat vision. And best of all, he can obliterate large structures with his super bark. Bolt is my hero.

You got the chance to meet Bolt recently, didn’t you?

I did – and it was awesome. Every minute I spent in Bolt’s company became the new greatest minute of my life. I couldn’t believe it when I saw him standing outside my RV.

What did you think when you first spotted him?

I said to myself, “Do my eyes deceive me? Is this some apparition I see before me – or do I really see my hero standing there?”

And it was really Bolt?

It was! Standing in front of me was the dog who singlehandedly destroyed the green-eyed man’s undersea labs, the hero who foiled Calico’s evil plans to infiltrate the Olympics with cyborgs. Bolt the super dog was standing right there. It was fully awesome!

Did Bolt teach you anything?

If Bolt taught me one thing, it’s about how you never abandon a friend in a time of need. When your teammate is in trouble, you go. Whether you know if you’ll return or not, you go. You go and you help. That’s what heroes do.

Sounds like you’re a big admirer of Bolt the super dog…

Oh, I am. Everyone needs a hero. Everyone needs someone who can show them that impossible is possible. Bolt is that hero. He’s awesome. He’s legendary. You know what? I’ve got my very own Bolt birthmark, too. It’s like we’re twins.

What was Bolt up to when you first met him?

He was wandering around our RV Park with a cat called Mittens. I thought Mittens was an agent of the green-eyed man, but I was wrong. Bolt was looking for Penny, who is the most wonderful person ever. She loves Bolt.

So you all went on a bit of an adventure together?

That’s right! I said to Bolt, “I have a ball and I can roll with the punches.” I told him that I had razor-sharp reflexes and how I was a master of stealth. I eat danger for breakfast – and I was starving!

Where was the most fun place you visited on your travels?

I’ve been to a lot of cities, but I love the bright lights of Las Vegas. The trashcans outside the buffet restaurants are amazing in Vegas. They’re full of awesome treats. They throw out entire cakes and huge slices of meat lover’s pizza!

Are you a fan of pizza?

Mmm…Don’t get me started on food! Pizza is my favorite. Especially meat lover’s pizza. I can’t recommend it enough. Seriously, try it. It’s fully awesome. Nearly as awesome as my good friend, Bolt.

In celebration of March 22nd Blu-ray & March 24th DVD releases of BOLT, here’s an interview with Miley Cyrus who does the voice of Penny, Bolt’s person.
Miley talks about relying on her own voice, her dogs and how her and Penny are alike/different.
Q: You’re an actress and a performer. In animation, we only get to hear your voice. What was it like just relying on your voice?

In celebration of March 22nd Blu-ray & March 24th DVD releases of BOLT, here’s an interview with Miley Cyrus who does the voice of Penny, Bolt’s person.

Miley talks about relying on her own voice, her dogs and how her and Penny are alike/different.

Q: You’re an actress and a performer. In animation, we only get to hear your voice. What was it like just relying on your voice?

MILEY CYRUS: Ever since I was little, people would always make jokes about my low voice. But they also complimented me on it—‘it’s so different, it’s so low.’ But still, in school, people would make fun of it. But now, I think it’s so cool that you don’t have to have the picture-perfect, girly voice to do an animated film. I think it’s great for kids with different voices to know that they could do something like this.

Q: How many dogs do you have? It comes across in your voice when your character is playing with Bolt.

MILEY CYRUS: I have six. You could tell? You could hear the baby voice? ‘Come on, boy, c’mon Bolt!’ Everyone was laughing when I was doing that part—they thought it was the greatest thing that I was speaking to Bolt like he was real. Yeah, I have six dogs, and I love ‘em!

Q: When your fans and friends come see BOLT, what sort of message do you think they’ll get?

MILEY CYRUS: There are certain movies you go and see, and then after, you wanna go home and talk to your best friend and tell her that you really love her. I hope on this one, people will want to go home and love on their dog. I hope that they realize, one, that you love your pets and know what great friends they can be. And two, that no matter what you do for a living, realize that that can go away in a second …it’s people, like Penny or your best friend, that matter.

Q: What was the process of making this animated film like for you? How long did it take?

MILEY CYRUS: I recorded it in about five sessions, so it was pretty quick. That was great. I loved going in there in my sweats—that was my favorite part. ‘All right, I’m a mess, let’s roll it, let’s get it done!’ Then I’d go home and take a shower!

Q: What was it like, working with the directors?

MILEY CYRUS: I worked mostly one-on-one with Chris [Williams]. It was great, working that way, having the director right there to tell me what was needed. That really made things easier…and fun, too.

Q: But if you’re recording sporadically, you have to remember what you were doing the last time, what your character was feeling…did that come easily to you?

MILEY CYRUS: Yeah, it was something that came easily. The only thing that was hard is that I’m really strict with myself—I want everything to be perfect, if I’m going to do it. I had to realize that this wasn’t me on-camera, I wasn’t animating and that I didn’t get to use my hands or anything. It was hard not to be able to use my body to get across what I was trying to do. I thought that was a little frustrating.

Q: How is your character of Penny compared to you? How are you different, how are you alike?

MILEY CYRUS: Penny is a little hard core—I love the opening scene, that is my favorite. Everyone was always asking me what my favorite scene was, and I’d say, ‘I love it when she comes in with her hair all chopped off, and her Doc Marten boots and she’s riding her skateboard.’ I think that’s so cool, something that I’ve never been able to do. I’ve always kind of wanted to be that girl. And I love how vulnerable she gets when she loses Bolt. So she shows that that’s just a persona.

Q: Tell me the set-up of the film.

MILEY CYRUS: I think it’s a wonderful film, it’s really well done. It’s about Bolt, a dog, who thinks he has all of these super powers because he’s on a television show. He comes to realize that what makes him special isn’t all of these things that he uses to catch the bad guys, to fight them off, but that it’s Penny—she’s the one who gives him his strength and confidence. When he’s not with her, he becomes vulnerable, and not as confident.

I had the opportunity to participate in a Virtual Roundtable about the new Disney short “Super Rhino”. “BOLT” is coming out on Blu-ray (a combo pack!) on March 22nd and on standard DVD March 24th. On the Blu-ray and DVD is a short film entitled “Super Rhino” and it’s so funny!
The virtual roundtable was a Q&A session with Nathan Greno (the director of Super Rhino) and Mark Walton (the voice of Rhino). Rhino has become such a popular character from BOLT and definitely seem to steal the show.

It was great to be able to ask these guys questions about the new short and Rhino himself.

Q: When did you get the idea to do the "Super Rhino" short for the DVD? How long did it take to make it?

Nathan Greno: When I was finishing up as story supervisor on bolt — John Lasseter asked for short pitches for the DVD. I pitched the idea of Rhino getting Bolt’s power’s. John was onboard and asked me to start developing the idea. The schedule was very tight, I believe we finished the entire short in 3-4 months (the crew was still finishing Bolt at the time!).

Q: (For Mark) Rhino is supposed to be a lot like you. Was there a portion of the movie that was unusually hard for you to do, or where you had the hardest time doing it "in character"?

Mark Walton: Actually, most of the time, it was pretty easy – the directors pretty much just wanted me to be myself as much as possible (well, if I happened to be a hamster). The hardest part for me, I think, was just enunciating, speaking clearly and not too slowly – I sound pretty mumbly and unintelligible in normal life, but I tried to step up my game for Rhino, and having the editors choose the best takes of every line reading (sometimes 60 for a single line) helped too!

Q: (For Mark) Was it hard to do the singing part in the short? How familiar did you have to get with the collected works of Miley Cyrus to prepare for it?

Mark Walton: (laughs) Well, I had to listen to that "Best of Both Worlds" song over and over, but as it turned out, what was funnier was Rhino singing a really bad version of the song that wasn’t quite accurate. I actually did the song several times before they got me to sing it bad enough, so I guess that was a challenge. It was fun, though!

Q: Could you tell us about the success of the film BOLT? Were you pleased with its overall reception?

Mark Walton: The reception was really gratifying – lots and lots of positive reviews (an unusually high "rotten tomatoes" rating), the Academy Award nomination, an Annie nomination for me – it was awesome. Hopefully even more people will watch the DVD.

Q: Will SUPER RHINO be theatrically screened so that it can be considered for the Best Short Oscar?

Mark Walton: Sadly, no, but hey – if millions and millions and millions of people buy the DVD, that will be the best award of all.

Q: Is there going to be some kind of sequel/spinoff of Bolt?

Mark Walton: Well, there is the Rhino short on the DVD/ Bluray, which is cool, but I hope there’s more! Write a letter! I need the money! Seriously, I really love performing Rhino, and it would be great to do more.

Q: A question to Nathan, is Rhino going to have his own movie?

Nathan Greno: No plans right now — but you never know! When we were making the movie we had no idea there was going to be a short!

Q: How long did it take to make this short?

Mark Walton: I’m told it took 3 – 4 months. Crazy, huh?

Q: What made you decide to build a short around Rhino?

Nathan Greno: I wanted to do something different and unexpected — Rhino with Bolt’s powers fit the bill.

Q: What is that blobby thing on Rhino’s side? Is it supposed to represent something like Bolt’s lightning bolt, or is it just a different colored patch of fur?

Mark Walton: I think it’s just a patch of darker fur, but Rhino, delusional as ever, equates it to Bolt’s lightning bolt mark, linking him (in his mind) even more closely to his hero.

Q: For Mark: Any future plans for Rhino, like a spin-off sequel perhaps?

Mark Walton: Your mouth to Bob Iger’s ear! I don’t know of anything yet, but one can hope.

Q: For Nathan and Mark, What is your favorite Bolt scene, and why?

Nathan Greno: It’s hard to pick a favorite! I love the "fake" TV ending — it’s really goofy and unexpected. It’s also really heartbreaking to watch Bolt return to the set only to find Penny has "replaced" him. I’m really proud of what we did with that scene.

Mark Walton: For me, I really like the escape from the animal shelter – the writing, the designs of the guards, the animation, the voice performances, all came together in top form (plus, I got to sing!) I also love the bit where Bolt thinks that Penny has "moved on" and he drops the carrot – it chokes me up just writing about it!

Q: For Mark, The DVD has video of the animators rolling down the hallways of the studio in a giant inflatable hamster ball. Did you do it, and what did you learn from doing it that you brought into the movie?

Mark Walton: I did a commercial for the Movie Surfers, where I had to go through an obstacle course multiple times in the Zorb. I learned that I’m really glad that voice actors don’t actually have to do all the things that the animators can make their characters do, or that a live actor does in a movie! It was hot and exhausting and I fell out of the ball a couple of times and messed up my back! But I’m fine now.

Q: Mark, What did you bring to the character of Rhino? How did you manage to make him that crazy (in the greatest sense)?

Mark Walton: Well, I just tried to imagine how I would feel if the character of my favorite book or movie showed up, in the flesh, at my door to take me on an adventure – how would I feel? How would I act? (Ecstatic and slightly crazy) Luckily, the writing for Rhino was so good, I felt like it was easy to know how to act, and the directors helped coach me a lot. I guess there’s something about my voice and my laugh that some people liked, but so many people – the writers, animators, modelers, etc. did so much to bring Rhino to life, I feel like I was just the cherry on top.

Q: Nathan, what did Miley Cyrus think of the Hannah Montana parody?

Nathan Greno: Miley was incredibly easy to work with — she’s very enthusiastic and professional. I haven’t heard her reaction to the finished short — but I’m sure she’ll laugh. She has a great sense of humor.

Q: Nathan, how much can you speak about Rapunzel without putting our lives at risk?

Nathan Greno: I couldn’t be happier with the direction Rapunzel is headed. It’s a very smart, funny comedy. Stay tuned!

Q: Mark, What did you like the most about Rhino?

Mark Walton: I really like how Rhino is comfortable in his own skin – he’s enthusiastic and crazy, and he worships Bolt, and he doesn’t care if anyone else approves or understands or likes his crazy laugh – if he was an evil jerk, that could be a problem, but I think his love of Bolt and his enthusiasm are contagious. Plus, he doesn’t ever seem to let his physical limitations get in the way of doing what he needs to do – for a hamster in a ball, he does some pretty amazing things!

Q: Nathan, Are there any future plans for the awesome Rhino?

Nathan Greno: You never know! While we were working on BOLT we had no idea there was going to be a Rhino short! Time will tell.

Q: Mark, how did you come up with the voice for Rhino? Was it based on any one?

Mark Walton: I’m pretty much just doing my voice, my personality. I mean, I hope I have a slightly stronger grip on reality than Rhino does, but we’re both pretty enthusiastic about the people and things we’re interested in, and un-self-conscious about how we come across to others. I tried doing what I thought was a hamster voice when I first auditioned, but the directors (who know me) told me to just be myself as much as possible. I do have other friends who are really into Star Trek, Star Wars, comic books, Disney, animation, etc, and I suppose I thought about them a little when Rhino was being really obsessive, but it’s mostly me.

Q: Mark, have you met Miley Cyrus and did you get her autograph?

Mark Walton: I did meet Miley Cyrus! This young woman at the studio suddenly shouted at me from down the hall, and was complimenting my performance, and I thought she was sweet – and then someone asked if we wanted a picture together, and I didn’t realize until she came up right next to me it was her! She seemed really nice. I didn’t have time to get her autograph, but I got a nice picture with her!

Q: Mark, How did Miley Cyrus feel about Rhino doing Best of Both Worlds?

Mark Walton: Frankly, I’m afraid she was consumed by jealousy and a serious inferiority complex – I can’t blame her, it’s gotta be hard to see the writing on the wall. No, seriously, I’m not sure if she’s seen the finished film with my singing yet, but I’m sure my (purposely) bad version of the song makes her look even better by comparison.

Q: Mark, what are you and Nathan working on now?

Mark Walton: Actually, I’m really busy promoting the Bolt DVD/Blu-ray these days – Rhino is going to be doing TV interviews next, so that’s pretty fun! Nathan is directing Rapunzel for Disney, which takes up all of his time, I imagine.

“I’m always on duty. I do not sleep. I do not rest until my Penny is safe from his evil clutches.”

Here’s a cute interview with Bolt:

Hi Bolt! Life as a super dog must be pretty amazing…

It sure is! My life is one big adventure because I spend all of my time looking out for Penny. She’s my person and she loves me to bits, but she often finds herself in some scary situations.

Tell us about some of these spectacular adventures…

I’ve been involved in loads of daring chases and fur-raising escapes. I’ve even saved a busload of schoolchildren from an unexploded bomb! They didn’t realize how close they were to danger, but I saved them all.

Is it easy to spot a baddie from a good guy?

Well, you can usually tell if they’re chasing you with a bomb! A bomb is a bit of a giveaway really…

We’ve heard you’ve got loads of super powers. Does that mean you can fly?

Can I fly? Don’t be ridonculous! Flying is for pigeons. I have a variety of special super powers, but flying isn’t one of them.

We’ve heard a rumor you can obliterate tall structures with your superbark…

Superbark? Who told you about that? Have you been ollowing me? I thought I was good at keeping undercover. How on Earth can you know about something so secret?

We’re only asking…

Well, I do have a super bark, but I can’t talk about it. It’s classified. Next question.

Can you tell us about any of your amazing super powers?

Oh, alright…I can out-run speeding missiles with my super speed skills and I have super strength, too. I can also burn through solid metal with my laser eyes.

Laser eyes? Wow! They sound incredible…

They’re great – and they come in very handy when you’re up against an evil villain like the green-eyed man.

Who’s the green-eyed man?

He’s a cat-loving criminal mastermind – and he’s always stirring up trouble for Penny and me. His real name is Dr. Calico, but I never call him that. He’s got this glaring green eye that creeps everyone out. Well, everyone except for me, of course.

So you’re always saving Penny from this evil dude?

Yep, that’s what I do. I’m always on duty. I do not sleep. I do not rest until my Penny is safe from his evil clutches.

What would you do if the green-eyed man walked into

the room now?

I would have no problem superbarking right here, right now. If you choose to follow the route of evil, you will ultimately lose – so watch out, green-eyed man. Your days are numbered!

Wait aminute…What is that darkmarking on your fur?

It’s a birthmark. It’s wonderful, isn’t it? It’s in the exact shape of a thunderbolt, which is very apt considering my name is Bolt. My birthmark is my sign of power. It makes me who I am.

Very cool indeed! Before we go, have you got any words of wisdom for us?

Never underestimate the power of pink Styrofoam.

What?! Pink Styrofoam?

Yep. I’ve discovered that pink Styrofoam takes my powers away. It weakens me. A small, peanut-sized piece of the pink stuff can strip me of my abilities. It’s awful. Be careful everyone! Don’t let the pink Styrofoam get to you…

“BOLT” is making its Blu-ray debut on March 22nd! You can purchase the Blu-ray + DVD + Digital File Combo Pack on the 22nd and the standard DVD on the 24th.

In celebration of the release, I have a fun Q&A with Penny (voiced by Miley Cyrus), who is Bolt’s person. She talks about fame, acting and her precious pup Bolt.

What’s life like as a famous actress, Penny?

Acting is a lot of fun, but I’m not the star of the show. That’s Bolt, of course! He’s the one who people tune into watch every week. He’s the prefect canine co-star and I love him to bits.

Tell us about your television show…

It’s an action adventure about a super dog called Bolt. He is a pooch with incredible strength, laser vision and a powerful superbark. You don’t want to mess with Bolt! He’s always helping my character escape from danger and away from the clutches of the evil green-eyed villain, Dr. Calico.

You and Bolt must be very close…

We are! Bolt is my favorite animal in the world, but I feel sorry for him at times because he is never allowed to be a real dog. I always want to take him home at the weekends and play with him, but I’m never allowed.

Why’s that?

Because the big bosses make Bolt stay in his trailer every night. I asked my agent if I could take Bolt home – just for one night – but I wasn’t allowed. It really upsets me because I don’t like the thought of him being alone all the time.

Does Bolt live in a swanky trailer?

It is lovely. There are photos of Bolt and me all over the walls – and he has loads of space in there. Bolt believes everything on the show is real, so he isn’t allowed to leave in case he finds out the truth. He can’t find out it’s just a TV show. It’s all a bit sad really.

When did you and Bolt first meet?

We met years ago when I rescued him from an animal shelter. I remember the first time I saw him. He looked so cute! I knew I had to have him as soon as I set my eyes on him. His tail was wagging and he was all slobbery. He was so cool!

How often do you get to hang out with Bolt?

I spend as much time as possible with Bolt. In fact, my favorite hobby is having fun with my buddy. He’s so loving and caring – and slobbery.

Do you have any other hobbies?

I also love photography. I take a camera with me wherever I go and I’m always snapping pictures. I try to take a photo at the end of every adventure I go on with Bolt to remind us of the fun we have. I’ve got all the pictures at home.

Does Bolt have a favorite hobby?

He loves everything that normal dogs enjoy, including going for walks and playing with toys. His favorite toy isMr. Carrot, which is a squeaky carrot. Bolt’s had Mr. Carrot ever since we first met and he can’t get enough of chewing him.

How would you describe Bolt?

Bolt is a slobbery good boy who I love to bits!

Can you describe your puppy pal in one word?

Ooh, that’s a toughie! Let me think… [Penny pauses to ponder the question] Oh, I know. I’d describe Bolt as “Pawfect”! Ha ha! Geddit? Per-fect? Paw-fect? Bolt is the most paw-fect dog in the world – and don’t you forget it!

I fall in love with Rhino a little more each time I watch it. He is just one of those classic, not to be forgotten, Disney characters. I think Rhino has a great career ahead of him.
On March 22nd, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is releasing the Blu-ray + DVD + Digital File Combo Pack. Two days after that (March 24) they will release the standard DVD version.

Miley Cyrus walked the 81st Academy Awards red carpet just a few minutes ago. She looks like a princess! She wore a Zuhair Murhad gown and accessorized it with a Mary Norton clutch, BCBG shoes and Neil Jane jewels.
Miley’s movie “BOLT” is up for Best Animated feature. I thought it was a great movie, but I think “Wall-E” will win.
I had a feeling she would walk the red carpet with her mom, instead of her boyfriend Justin Gaston, but I know some of you had hope we would see them together.
So, two questions for you:
