Disney XD Reaches a Larger Girl Audience Than Boys
September 3, 2009 by Julie Bonner
When Disney made the switch from Toon Disney to Disney XD, their focus was geared toward the “tween” boy audience. Rich Ross, president of Disney Channels Worldwide, made the comment that the goal of rebranding Toon Disney into Disney XD was always “to create this destination for boys that is still inclusive of girls.”
Well, the channel has got a lot more popular with girls. Does this mean Disney has a problem with winning over the young male audience? Maybe so, but their recent solution might just help out with that a little bit. What solution? The Marvel one! It was announced earlier this week that Disney would be acquiring Marvel for around $4 billion.
In October, Disney XD will premiere its sitcom “I’m in the Band”, which is “about a teenager who joins a washed-up ’80s rock band that moves in with him and his single mother.” Once again, I have a feeling this will bring in more of a female audience. A boy in a rock band? Girls love that.
Producer Michael Kaplan said this about the show: “It’s doing a show about rock ‘n’ roll without the sex and drugs. There’s the whole fantasy of being in a rock band, but there’s also just the fun of being a kid with these three crazy idiots who are just making his life chaos, which is just a very boy-friendly thing.”
Does the Disney XD shift have Rich Ross worried? I don’t think so. He says that skeptics shouldn’t be so hard on a network that has turned out such great hits like High Schoil Musical, Hannah Montana and The Jonas Brothers. He went on to say “We keep on believing in the property and the world returns our favor. My expectations are high but I’m a patient man.”

i love disney xd
its not girly and has show like aaron stone and iron man on it which makes it more appealing for boys
i am a girls who watches xd because i dont like girly show
I find this ironic given that when my daughter tried to design a Design XD logo and wanted to place a girl in her logo – there was only 1 girl out of 12 images available – the other 11 were boys. Yet, you promote here that more girls than boys watch Disney XD?? Somethings not connecting here…
